School holidays 2022 across the UK

The fact that the UK is a political union between four nations – England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland – with varying levels of autonomy and independence means that mapping the school holidays 2022/23 is no easy task! 😅

The dates of school holidays in the UK are determined by the respective education departments of each country. In England and Wales, Local Education Authorities – LEAs – are responsible for setting their own term and holiday dates each year. 

In Scotland, holiday dates are set by each of the 32 council areas and in Northern Ireland, although holiday dates are announced at a council level, they tend to be the same across the entire region.

While each nation follows the same three-term-per-year model, the start and end date of each term can vary by more than a week from country to country. So, always check with your child's school for their exact term dates! 🚸

The holiday dates announced at a council area level don’t tend to change but we recommend keeping an eye on your specific council area homepage so as not to miss any urgent or last-minute updates. 

*Schools in Edinburgh also take Monday 19 September 2022 as an ‘Autumn holiday’, Monday 1 May 2023 as ‘May Day holiday’ and Monday 22 May 2023, and ‘Victoria Day holiday’. Again, please check with your child's school for exact dates.

School holidays 2022 in Northern Ireland

The holiday dates announced at a council level don’t tend to change but we recommend keeping an eye on the Department of Education homepage so as not to miss any urgent or last-minute updates.

*Schools in Northern Ireland also take Monday 1 May as ‘May Day holiday’.

Schools in Northern Ireland can take a number of staff training and school development days. These days – which pupils do not need to attend – will differ between schools. Again, please check with your child's school for exact dates.

Bank holidays 2022/23

Bank holidays are national public holidays – traditionally used to celebrate the days that banking institutions close for business – now they are celebrated nationwide. Most workplaces will close for the day, shops, if open, will operate on reduced hours and schools will also close. 🏖️

Again, bank holidays vary a little between England & Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland so we’ve pulled together a handy table so that you can see which bank holidays apply to you and your family at a glance for the academic year 2022/23.

Remember, if a bank holiday is on a weekend, a ‘substitute’ weekday becomes a bank holiday, normally the following Monday. 🙌
