As the UK weather flip flops from sun-drenched to drizzly and back again, the summer holidays can roll by all too quickly. Whether you’re living it up in the paddling pool or barbecuing in the rain, it’s easy to lose track of the days. Before you know it, you’ll be thinking about the new school term. But when exactly does it start? 🤔

Parents in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland can use our handy guide to help them with their planning.📋
School term dates across the UK
In England, Scotland and Wales, term dates are determined by the LA (Local Authority). In Northern Ireland, the start of the school year is outlined by the Department of Education. So, it’s no surprise that the start dates for schools across the UK vary quite a bit.
It’s important to make sure you have the right date in your calendar - no-one wants to turn up a day early or a day late! In addition to our round-up of UK school start dates, you can also use the GOV.UK website to check the information for individual schools.🏫
While schools that are maintained by their local council have to stick to specific term dates, voluntary aided schools, academies and free schools are able to set their own term dates. Our advice - don’t get caught out by assuming that your child will go back on the same day as their friends from other schools in the area.
When are INSET days?
Love them or loathe them, INSET (short for ‘in service training’) days are a necessity for every school - giving school staff the opportunity to access training and development. For maintained schools in England and Scotland, there are five INSET per academic year. For schools in Wales, there are currently six INSET days. In Northern Ireland, Schools can take up to five inset days in the school year.🎓
In some cases, the dates for some of these training days are set out by the Local Authority, but it’s often up to the school’s governing body to decide when they want to schedule their training for staff members.🗓️
School term dates in England
In England, maintained schools follow the academic calendar as set out by the Local Authority. Schools in England have to be open for at least 190 days each academic year, with a further five days of training for staff members.

Schools in Scotland are open to students for 190 days per year with a further five training days per academic year. Term dates can vary by up to a week so it’s even more important to make sure that everyone’s school bags are packed and ready to go in good time! 🎒
