Interview: Burcu Uzun, Marketing Lead at GoStudent

We had a chat with Burcu Uzun, the Marketing Lead for the Turkish Market at GoStudent. Find out more about her job role, why she joined the team and what makes working at GoStudent so great. 
Can you tell us a little bit about your background? Describe the path that led you to GoStudent.

I was keen to experience working at an international start-up company so I applied for the position at GoStudent. But there were also other motivations that made me excited to work at GoStudent; the feeling of helping people to educate & develop themselves is priceless. 

I was also excited to launch the team for a new market. I like challenges and saw this as one of the biggest challenges of my life. I wanted to see if it was going to be a success story or not. 

I started on 3rd May when we were launching the team for Turkey. We were only 6 people. I’m the Head of Marketing covering the Turkish market.

How do you identify with GoStudent’s mission?

“Unlocking the full potential” can be seen as a motto for my entire life. I always believe there is so much in us waiting to be unlocked, we often just need a sign to trigger it. 

This started for me on the first day of school when I was a kid. There was a girl who could already manage to write and read, I asked myself why I couldn’t. It took me only 4 days to learn how to read & write. Some call it ambition but I call it a passion for life.
GoStudent also helps people to unlock their full potential and find their passion. I am so proud to be a part of it. 

With this in mind, “unlocking the full potential” can also refer to the colleagues in my team. It is so essential that a leader should make team members feel independent and confident with their own ideas. There can be some silliness, that’s how a human brain develops an idea! A team should be able to laugh together at each other’s mistakes while being proud of others' successes. 

Can you tell us about what your role involves? What do you do on a daily basis?

I was expecting that this role would be more focused on the creative side, but we also are very engaged with numbers, like, lots of numbers! I always believe if someone can use both the creative and analytical sides of the brain, then there is no reason for that campaign to fail. That is the most important thing I’ve learned at GoStudent. And I have to admit that talking about numbers makes you look super cool! 

How do you see yourself growing professionally with GoStudent?

I started as a Community and SoMe Manager for Turkey. But I always wanted to go big to make GoStudent a cool & popular brand. With all the support I’ve had from my managers, I’m seeing real progress and that makes me so proud. I’ve worked alone in the market for quite a while so now I’m also covering other related departments. This has also taught me a lot. Since January, I've been leading the marketing team for Turkey with a team of 5.

I look forward to executing a project where we create an equal opportunity in education for all students worldwide. We are at the developmental stage, so let's keep this a secret for now.
